Abracadaver (also known as "The Magical Zombie") is the titular main antagonist of the episode of the same name in The Powerpuff Girls cartoon series. He is an undead magician with frightening magical powers and an enemy of the Powerpuff Girls.
He was voiced by Frank Welker who also voice Fred Jones from Scooby-Doo franchise and Bullet from the episode "Stray Bullet" and "The City of Nutsville".
Background[]
Personality[]
In the past, Al Lusion was a friendly magician who enjoyed entertaining the crowd with his amazing tricks. However, he can be absent-minded and even self-conceited at times, such as when he made a girl's favorite toy vanish and forgot to return it to her. In addition, he was extremely sensitive to mockery, as he was severely traumatized after the crowd laughed at him after he was exposed.
Due to his tragic past, Abracadaver became a vengeful undead who wanted nothing-else but to torment the living with his sorcery. He especially wanted revenge on the one responsible for his death, and was quick to mistake another for her if they resembled her enough. He also does not like surprise attacks.
Physical appearance[]
Back when he was alive, Al Lusion wore a magician's hat and outfit with a flower on it. He also had a mustache, a goatee and a mole on the lower right side of his face.
After becoming a zombie, Abracadaver's flesh had rotted out with his nasal bone, jaw bone and cranium visible. The tips of his finger bones were also seen, resembling sharp nails. His eyes burned red with rage, his mustache was reduced to three whiskers on each side and his goatee was shaggy. His outfit and hat became tattered with time and the flower on his tuxedo was dead black. His left shoe was also worn out with the toes sticking out and his right foot was reduced to bone.

Past[]
Long ago, a famed magician by the name of Al Lusion was regarded as the greatest magician of all time. Then one day, while he was performing at the Townsville Magic Theatre (which the Mayor of Townsville observed as a young boy), he asked for a volunteer from the audience, and chose a little girl that bore a heavy resemblance to the Powerpuff Girls. After the girl came upstage, Al "borrowed" the girl's teddy bear, which he then made disappear into thin air with his own hands. He then bowed to the audience, but forgot to return the teddy, causing the little girl to become heartbroken. In a fit of rage, the girl lunged at Al, grabbing and pulling down his pants, which allowed several magician items to fly out and expose him as a fraud. Everyone began laughing at Al Lusion, causing him to have a breakdown. As he desperately attempted to get his items back, he ended up stumbling over his pants right into the direction of an iron maiden. The audience's delight soon turned to horror as Al fell right in, causing it to snap shut ending the magician's life in a most dramatic and unfortunate way.
Al Lusion's body was never removed from the iron maiden, and was left to rot as the magic theater fell into disrepair. Unbeknownst to everyone, however, Al developed a powerful hatred for humanity for laughing at him, which allowed him to remain alive inside the maiden for all these years as an undead creature capable of real magic known as Abracadaver.
Present[]
Decades later, after telling the Powerpuff Girls the tragic tale of Al Lusion, the Mayor of Townsville gleefully orders the old theater to be demolished. During the deconstruction, one of the wrecking balls smashes the iron maiden Al Lusion died in. This allowed Abracadaver to finally escape his entrapment, and upon reaching out of his spiky coffin, manifested a bouquet of dead roses.
Still traumatized by the crowd's mockery, Abracadaver began skulking through Townsville, using his magic to terrorize the citizens. His terrible actions include turning people into inanimate objects, turning inanimate objects into undead animals, transforming a building into a stack of playing cards which he then topples by removing one, and having large saws cut up the other buildings. The Powerpuff Girls were eventually called in by the Mayor to deal with this threat, but after having just watched a movie involving zombies, they were afraid to do so. Blossom musters the courage to approach him and ask him to stop. However, upon looking at Blossom, Abracadaver mistakes her for the young girl who unintentionally caused his humiliation and death, filling him with rage.
Desiring revenge on the one responsible for his demise, Abracadaver holds up a watch on string which he uses to hypnotize Blossom into an unconscious state. Angered by this, Buttercup punches him into a building, causing him to break apart. Buttercup is satisfied until Bubble points out that his arm holding the watch is still levitating in front of Blossom, keeping her hypnotized. Upset at being sucker-punched, Abracadaver uses his magic to piece himself back together and then traps Buttercup in a box with a saw about to cut her in half. Bubbles tries to flee, but is caught in a bag and thrown in a water tank. Abracadaver then declares to his "assistant" Blossom that it was time for the "grand finale". Pulling a hanker-chief from his sleeve, he ties up Blossom completely into it. He then prepares to kill Blossom by throwing into an iron maiden, simulating the same way he himself perished. After toying with her a little bit with some close calls, the maiden finally snaps shut on Blossom, seemingly killing her and shocking everyone present.
When it seemed all hope was lost, Abracadaver suddenly revealed himself to be Blossom in disguise, who then rescued her sisters from their traps. The real Abracadaver was then found to be inside the maiden, ending his reign of terror for good.

Trivia[]
- His voice sounds the same as the Inspector Gadget character, Dr. Claw.
- His former name Al Lusion is a pun of "allusion" and "illusion", while his new name is a pun on "Abracadabra" and "cadaver", which refers to a corpse.
- Al Lusion coming back to life as a vengeful zombie refers to folkore stating that unburied bodies, like Al's, eventually become vengeful revenants. The mayor awakening Al Lusion as Abra Cavadver via destroying the theatre and Iron Maiden he was enclosed in, refers to mythology stating ghosts and zombies often reinanimate when their place of rest is disturbed as the wrecking ball disturbed Al Lusion.
- He can be spotted briefly during the opening sequence.
- In terms of his physiology, Abracadaver is a Lich, an undead being that originates from Russian folklore. However, he's also in a way similar to Revenants, which are also undead beings but come from European folklore. Sometimes Revenants can be ghosts, while at other times zombies, but that's focused on more is that they reanimate back to life for vengeance until certain conditions are met. There is one reason on why they want to exact revenge, and that is people having wronged them or outright murdered them, which is the exact same goal that Abracadaver really wanted ever since the people had laughed at him in the first place.
- He is the 3rd darkest villain to ever feature on the show.
