Benjamin Kirby "Ben" Tennyson is the titular protagonist of the Ben 10 franchise. He was a normal ten-year-old kid until he found the Omnitrix, a powerful watch-like device that allowed him to turn into ten different aliens. Though initially immature and clumsy, Ben grew to be a true hero. By the time he was sixteen, he had become famous in not only his hometown of Bellwood, but on Earth and beyond. Ben has also been deputized by the Plumbers and gained more aliens as time progressed.

Background[]

Personality[]

Initially cocky, childish, and arrogant, Ben's immaturity and attention-seeking behavior often led him to joke around, regardless of the situation. His allies often criticized his attitude, unaware of the fact that he used humor to mask his fears. Despite some childish attitude, he was heroic, caring and generally good-natured, always willing to save others at any time. As seen in Heroes United, Ben seems to be oblivious to certain things, such as the fact that he was transported to another dimension, yet he thought he was still in his world.

Over the years, Ben has displayed good leadership skills, as well as the ability to adapt his attitude to a situation, becoming serious when it's called for. He became more mature, responsible and sensible. He's kind-hearted, willing to sacrifice even his own life for others. His idealistic views and unwillingness to compromise his values – aspects condemned by Azmuth, yet commended by others – sometimes drive him to act against reason, such as helping his enemies if they need it (most remarkably Vilgax).[1] Professor Paradox has praised Ben's good nature, going so far as to say he had the gift to make the right choices at the right moments.[2]

However, when Ben fails to save someone, or if someone gets hurt because of his failures, he becomes angry and much more violent. Perhaps the most notable of these instances is when Kevin willingly mutated himself to succeed where Ben had failed and stop Aggregor, Ben was set on killing Kevin, even fighting Gwen when she refused to help him.[3] He also threatened to hunt down and destroy the Forever Knights once making Driscoll promise to cease the hunting of aliens.[4]

Though often stated to be silly or unintelligent because of his immaturity, Ben is cunning and resourceful when needed, quickly adapting when the Omnitrix doesn't provide him with the alien he wanted.

Later on, Ben starts thinking of himself as more of a superhero than a Plumber, often remarking that he's not a cop, but a superhero.[5] Although he once again became cocky, he retained his selfless and heroic nature.

Physical Appearance[]

Ben's physical appearance has changed throughout the series from a ten-year-old to a sixteen-year-old. However, he retains some recurring characteristics. He has shaggy brown hair, green eyes, pale skin, and he's quite skinny for his age, though he shows a lot of muscle definition due to being athletic.

Young[]

In the Omniverse flashbacks in which he was 5 years old, Ben wore green overalls with a white shirt underneath it. White numbers saying "5 1/2" were on a black square in front of his overalls.

In the original series and Omniverse flashbacks, Ben's usual clothes consisted of a black-striped, white shirt with short sleeves, military green cargo pants with side pockets, and black and white sneakers with black stripes. Ben wore the prototype Omnitrix on his left wrist.

Teenage[]

In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Ben wore a black shirt, blue jeans and a green jacket with white stripes and the number 10 on it, and black and white Converse-style shoes. Ben wore the prototype Omnitrix in Alien Force and the Ultimatrix in Ultimate Alien on his left wrist.

In Ultimate Alien, he wore a standard Plumber suit during a few of his off-world excursions.

Omniverse[]

In Omniverse, Ben wears a black shirt that has a green stripe in the middle with a white 10 and green stripes on the sides of his shirt. He wears brown cargo pants with pockets at the knees and green and white shoes. He later gains a white hooded jacket with green stripes on both arms and a green number 10 on the right side for some time. He wears the Omnitrix on his left wrist.

In Omniverse, while riding the Tenn-Speed, he wears a white helmet with the number 10 on it, a green visor, a short-sleeved black T-shirt, long white pants and a belt with the number 10 on it.

Transformations[]

Heatblast[]

Main article: Heatblast

Heatblast is a magma-based alien whose body is composed of a bright yellow inner magma body covered by a dark red or brown rocks. As a fire-based entity, his body radiates high amounts of heat. His feet have a slight oval-like design with only two toes and one back toe. Heatblast's tongue is made of fire.[1]

4 year old Heatblast looked the same as 10 year old Heatblast in the original series, but with a much thinner body, oversized head and much higher-pitched voice.

In Ultimate Alien, Heatblast closely resembled Alan, only taller and not as skinny and slightly altered and his face shape was more similar to the Original Series. His eyes were no longer connected to the fire on his head. The rocks over his body were darker, and their pattern was different, with fewer rocks covering his inner lava body. His voice sounded like Jetray's, except deeper.

In Heroes United, Heatblast looked the exact same as he did in the original series, only his jaw was a lot lower than it was before.

In The Forge of Creation, 10 year old Heatblast is a mix between the Ultimate Alien design and the original series' body colour and his Omnitrix symbol was green.

In Omniverse, 16 year old Heatblast looks the same as in Ultimate Alien, only his eyes are once again connected to the fire on his head, like in the original series. He is taller and more muscular, his face's design is different and his shoulder plates are slightly tilted up.

11 year old Ben's Heatblast in Omniverse looks exactly the same as the 16 year old Heatblast, except for the fact that he is shorter and much less muscular then his sixteen year old self.

Heatblast wears the Omnitrix/Ultimatrix symbol on his chest

Wildmutt[]

Main article: Wildmutt

Wildmutt is a dog-based alien without ears, eyes, and a nose. His posture and movements are also somewhat apelike. His teeth are very defined and stick out of his mouth. Since Wildmutt has no eyes, he uses his sense of smell and hearing to navigate, which are aided by three gill-like nostrils located on each side of his neck.

In the original series, Wildmutt wore a black-and-white brace with the original Omnitrix symbol on his left shoulder.

4-year-old Wildmutt looked very similar to his 10-year-old self, but a lot smaller and thinner.

In Ultimate Alien, 16-year-old Wildmutt looks mostly the same except his fur is lighter in color. While his lips were still black in the Ultimate Alien intro, they were in the same color as his fur in the actual series. He wore the Ultimatrix symbol on his chest.

In The Forge of Creation, 10-year-old Wildmutt looked mostly the same as in the original series, except his lips were in the same color has his fur, his shoulder brace did not have any white on it, and the original Omnitrix symbol was recolored green.

In Omniverse, Wildmutt's lips have returned to being black and his forearms are a bit bigger. 16-year-old Wildmutt wears a green and white collar with the Omnitrix symbol.

11-year-old Wildmutt looks closer his appearance in the original series than 10-year-old Wildmutt in Ultimate Alien, what with the white returning to the shoulder brace, though the Omnitrix symbol is still colored green.

Diamondhead[]

In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Diamondhead's lower body, torso, and the top of his head were similar to Chromastone's, consisting of indigo crystal which has black lines and dots over it. There were six crystal shards on his back instead of four, and he also sported two more on the front of his chest. His eyes were green, and he wore the Omnitrix/Ultimatrix symbol on his chest.

In Heroes United, Diamondhead's appearance consisted of real-world crystal due to being drawn in Generator Rex's art style. He also had blades on his forearms.

In Omniverse, Diamondhead has clothing almost similar to the first series, except that now instead of half black and half white, it is all black with one large green stripe down the middle up to his belt, and wears black pants. He has a green belt with white stripes on which he wears the Omnitrix symbol. Diamondhead no longer bears the crystals on his chest. The crystals on his back have also grown in length. His jaw is also larger. He also wears black shoes with green on the bottom. There are now only two crystal shards on his back.

11-year old Ben's Diamondhead looks almost identical to the original, but the left side of his suit is missing the black patch around the Omnitrix symbol and the crystals on his back are bigger. His jaw is also larger too. His eyes are green and the Omnitrix is recolored.

XLR8[]

XLR8's voice now sounds like Bens, but in a fast talking, higher-pitched way.

11-year-old Ben's XLR8 in Omniverse looks exactly the same as his 16-year-old version, except that he is shorter, and the green color of his shirt is white. He has three stripes on his tail.

Appearances[]

Television series[]

Ben 10[]

Ten-year-old Ben Tennyson, his ten-year-old paternal first-cousin Gwen, and their paternal Grandpa Max start their summer camping trip. Ben goes stomping off into the woods after another fight with Gwen, whom he is not happy to have along on the trip, and finds an alien pod on the ground. When he examines it, he finds a mysterious, watch-like device, called the Omnitrix (Prototype). The device attaches permanently to his wrist and gives him the ability to transform into a numerous variety of alien life-forms, each with their own unique powers and abilities. Although Ben realizes that he has a responsibility to help and save others with these new abilities at his disposal, he is not above a little ten-year-old super-powered mischief now and then. Along with Gwen and Max, Ben embarks on an adventure to fight evil, both extraterrestrial and earthly. Ben has faced lots of villains including villains fighting together in a team or a partner once Vilgax and Kevin 11 fought Ben.

Alien Force[]

Set five years after the end of the original series, Ben Tennyson, now a teenager, once again dons the Omnitrix to protect the earth and other parts of the universe from villainous alien activity. The Omnitrix itself, a wristwatch-shaped device, allows Ben to transform into numerous alien forms, thereby inheriting the unique abilities of that alien race.

At the end of the series, he threatened Albedo to give him the Ultimatrix after he made the Omnitrix (Prototype) self destruct it's self.

Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien takes place a few weeks after the events of the previous series. With the Omnitrix having been destroyed in the series finale of Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben Tennyson, now sixteen years old, must learn to master the powers of the Ultimatrix, a modified version of the Omnitrix which has the ability to evolve Ben's alien forms into much more powerful versions known as "ultimate forms." The series begins with the exposure of Ben's secret identity to the world by Jimmy Jones, a young internet conspiracy theorist who deduces his identity by studying alien sightings in Ben's hometown of Bellwood. Ben's exposure polarizes public opinion, with younger fans idolizing him, and adults (particularly news anchor Will Harangue) deriding Ben as a menace to society. Ben is now forced to adjust to a new life that not only involves battling the forces of evil alongside his cousin Gwen Tennyson and his friend Kevin Levin, but also his struggle against the pitfalls of his new-found fame.

The first season of Ultimate Alien revolves around an Osmosian villain named Aggregor, who kidnaps five powerful aliens from the Andromeda Galaxy in order to steal their powers. Although Ben and his team try to stop Aggregor, he succeeds in absorbing the aliens into himself, becoming virtually unstoppable. Ben then learns from Azmuth, the creator of the Omnitrix and Ultimatrix, that Aggregor's goal is to find the scattered pieces of the Map of Infinity, a map of spacetime which can lead him to a realm known as the Forge of Creation. Aggregor intends to enter the Forge of Creation and steal the powers of an infant Celestialsapien, a species of omnipotent, godlike aliens which can manipulate reality and time to an essentially unlimited extent with their thoughts. Aggregor manages to reach the Forge of Creation and the team pursues him. Both Ben and a 10-year old version of himself are defeated by Aggregor and all hope seems to be lost until Ben's younger self suggests to Kevin that he absorbs the powers of his Omnitrix as he did before when they were both young in order to defeat Aggregor. Kevin refuses and instead absorbs the powers of 16-year old Ben's Ultimatrix and manages to defeat Aggregor, absorbing his powers in the process. Unfortunately, the absorption of too much power overwhelms Kevin, leading him to insanity and an unquechable thirst for more power. This leads to a stand-off between him and Ben, who, after failed attempts at tracking and saving Kevin, resolves to kill Kevin to prevent him from hurting anyone. But with the aid of Gwen, he is able to instead remove Kevin's absorbed powers, saving him and restoring the five aliens from the Andromeda Galaxy back to life. [2]

The second season features primarily self-contained stories, including an episode in which Ben's ultimate forms achieve sentience and attempt to free themselves from within the Ultimatrix. Ben decides to sacrifice himself so that the ultimates can be free; instead, the Ultimatrix recognizes his selflessness and frees both him and the ultimates.

Both the second and third seasons of Ultimate Alien primarily focus on the Forever Knights, and particularly their leader, Sir George, an immortal soldier and the origin of the myth of Saint George and the Dragon. George seeks to prevent the threat of Dagon, an extradimensional energy being which he defeated in the 12th century, which now seeks to return to Earth and take over the minds of all humans. George is killed, but Dagon himself is absorbed by Ben's nemesis Vilgax. Ben defeats Vilgax by using George's sword, a weapon built by Azmuth that is powerful enough to destroy planets, to absorb Vilgax's power into itself.

Though tempted by the sword's power to wipe out all evil with a mere thought, Ben overcomes the temptation and returns it to Azmuth. Azmuth, impressed by Ben's exercise of self-control in the face of such strong temptation, tells Ben to give up the Ultimatrix and rewards him with a new Omnitrix which he says he has been working on since Ben got hold of the first Omnitrix in the original series. He then departs, telling Ben to use the Omnitrix well and do the right thing.

Omniverse[]

The series follows the adventures of sixteen-year-old Ben Tennyson, wielder of the Omnitrix, an extremely powerful watch-like device that allows Ben to change into a multitude of various aliens; each with their own special abilities and skills. The storylines alternate between that of eleven-year-old Ben (one year after the original series) and sixteen-year-old Ben (a few months after Ben 10: Ultimate Alien). After Gwen leaves for college and Kevin leaves to be closer to her, sixteen-year-old Ben gets a new partner, a rookie by-the-book alien plumber named Rook Blonko (surname first). On a mission to explore a secret underground alien city named Undertown, Ben explores the quirkier side of things in the alien underground and discovers that enemies from his past are looking for a rematch

In "T.G.I.S.", it is revealed that the Ben 10 universe shares the same universe with The Secret Saturdays.

Ben 10 (2016)[]

The 2016 iteration of Ben stars a Ben from another universe.

Ben Prime would later show up in this series in the series finale - Alien Force X-Tinction.

Other appearances[]

Secret of the Omnitrix[]

During a battle with Doctor Animo, Ben Tennyson's destruction of the scientist's "DNA bomb" accidentally sets off a self-destruct protocol in the Omnitrix (Prototype). Its activation alerts Tetrax Shard, a Petrosapien bounty hunter and friend of Ben, who travels with his Protost pilot Gluto to Earth in order to retrieve Ben. He explains the situation to Ben, who hasn't figured out the meaning of the countdown. He leaves Gwen and Grandpa Max behind, not wanting the latter to be recognized during their trip, but Gwen sneaks on board. Using the advanced medical equipment on board his ship, Tetrax finds the DNA signature of the Omnitrix's creator, Azmuth, and tracks him to a prison facility called Incarcecon. After staging a breakout, they free a female Chimera Sui Generis named Myaxx, who is revealed to be Azmuth's assistant. She had switched her DNA signature for Azmuth's when he refused to give her credit for helping to create the Omnitrix. Myaxx is also unable to disarm the self-destruct, but knows how to find Azmuth, and leads them to Xenon, where he is currently hiding. However, Ben and Max's arch-nemesis Vilgax, who has escaped the Null Void, also picks up on the Omnitrix's self-destruct signal and starts tracking Ben.

While attempting to reach Azmuth, they are attacked by Vilgax. Ben is ultimately successful in repelling the attack, though Tetrax's ship crashes on Azmuth's homeworld. As they enter his mountain fortress, they are attacked by a group of Florauna who capture Gwen. As Ben reluctantly proceeds with Tetrax and Myaxx towards Azmuth's lair, Tetrax empathizes with Ben, revealing how working for Vilgax cost him his planet and the people he's ever cared for. Tracking down Azmuth to a sealed laboratory, Ben asks him to shut down the Omnitrix, but Azmuth refuses. Angry, Ben breaks down the wall and attacks him, revealing Azmuth to be an old, curmudgeonly Galvan hiding inside a large mechanical suit. Vilgax, having recovered from his earlier defeat, leads an attack on Azmuth's mountain fortress. During the fight, Gwen and Gluto reappear, and Ben's actions renew Azmuth's faith in the universe, so he repairs the Omnitrix and gives Ben a brand-new alien form to use: Way Big, a gargantuan alien who wipes out Vilgax's drones and hurls Vilgax into deep space.

With the threat over, Ben offers to return the Omnitrix to Azmuth, who is leaving Xenon with Myaxx. Azmuth, however, sees Ben as the best place for the Omnitrix to be. Tetrax returns Ben and Gwen to Earth, and the Tennysons' hope of having a normal day of recreation, however, is dashed by a newsflash of zombies attacking the mall, leading them to rush to the rescue.
